'Auto Trends' Talks to the First State Offering Low $100 Monthly EV Payments (Two Shows)

This week on Auto Trends with JeffCars.com, a weekly syndicated multicultural automotive program, Washington State joins us to talk about their all-inclusive electrification program that literally leaves no eligible driver behind.

With many states and automakers making the shift toward electrification, infrastructure and affordability have been two of the major deterrents causing many Americans to steer clear of these non gasoline and diesel-powered cars.

While the price of an electric vehicle has slid from $65,000 two years ago during the peak of Covid to $57,000 this past quarter, the next phase of motoring continues to be out of reach for most Americans, especially being that the average transaction price of a new vehicle is approximately $48,000, according to Cox Automotive.

First Drive: 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 All-Electric Sedan

What's New: The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is the brand's first all-electric sedan. The midsize sedan looks similar to the brand's midsize Sonata. However, the Ioniq 6 has a longer wheelbase, which equates to more leg room.

Distinctive Styling: The styling of the Ioniq 6 is quite distinctive. From a side profile, the vehicle takes styling cues from the Mercedes-Benz CLS and the Porsche Panamera both which are high end luxury vehicles.

The rear end exudes an air of sophistication, with its double rear spoiler. Hyundai's folks say their latest EV is reminiscent of the cars from the 30s. In more modern terms, the Ioniq 6 rear styling harkens back to the classy looking Cadillac Seville sedan of the eighties. The bending of the rear sheet metal provides more efficiency, enhancing the driving range.

The Biden Administration Talks To 'Auto Trends' About The Latest Electric Vehicle Incentives Targeting Minorities And Low Income Car Buyers

DOE's Michael Berube (photo credit: DOE)

On August 16, 2022, under the Inflation Reduction Act, the Biden Administration announced the most drastic change to transform the auto industry, since Henry Ford revolutionized the development of mass produced cars. This new legislation will help to usher in, as well as aid the country transition toward purchasing both new and used electric vehicles, making them more affordable.

The Inflation Reduction Act will also aid California Air Resource Board (CARB) drive, no pun intended, to ban the sale of all-new gasoline powered cars in their state by 2035. California announced this initiative in September 2020. The state has always been the forerunner in the United States, as it relates to auto emission controls and helping to keep the environment green. Other states are expected to follow suit, eliminating the ban of new gasoline powered vehicles too.

The Pros And Cons: EV Buyers, Minorities And Biden's Inflation Reduction Act (Vehicles Eligible Included)

With the passage of Biden's game changing Inflation Reduction Act, this is expected to charge up the electric vehicle sales in both the new and used car segments.

Up until recently, Tesla, Toyota and General Motors customers were no longer eligible for upwards of $7,500 in tax credits toward the purchase of a new vehicle. Being that those automakers were early adopters of the electric vehicle movement and met the government requirement of selling 200,000 cars, this placed both their customers and the automakers at a disadvantage.
