Chris Benjamin, a native New Yorker, has joined an exclusive club, becoming one of a handful of Black automotive designers in the world to head a design studio.

Like the elite club of the four Black quarterbacks who have led their teams to the finish line in the Super Bowl, Benjamin finds himself in a car club just as exclusive as the Black NFL winning Super Bowl quarterbacks.

'Auto Trends' Kicks Off Black History Month With A Former Rainbow PUSH Automotive Activist: Where Do We Go From Here?

Change agent Glenda Gill (Photo Credit: GG)

Over the past week or so since Trump took office, he has been issuing out nonstop signed executive orders from The White House and Mar-a-Lago like a level 5 tornado tearing through an urban area during a busy workday.

As expected, there have been some immediate casualties, non-life threating injuries, uprooting, angst and mental frustration. Overall, as expected, there has been pure chaos and confusion.

'Auto Trends' Remembers Lexus First Black Female Car Dealer (1943 - 2024)

Car Dealer Ellenae Fairhurst (Photo Credit: TLMDA)

While It’s been widely reported that women influence over 85 percent of today’s car sales, still, this group only owns less than 1,100 out of the approximate 17,000 new-car dealerships in America. When we examine ethnic women, they own approximately 86 stores, according to the National Automobile Dealer Association and the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers.

And, as far as Black women, they barely register on the radar. This group represents less than a tenth of 1 percent of total new car dealerships.

Ironically, in a traditional African American household, Black women are responsible for 51 percent of last year’s new-vehicle registrations, slightly outpacing Black men.

Women's History Month: How Two Black-Women Are Driving Two Of Mercedes-Benz Black-Owned Dealerships

With less than 6 percent of today’s nearly 17,000 new-vehicle dealerships being minority-owned, its literally like finding a needle in a haystack to come across a mother-daughter dealership team. More specifically, a mother-daughter squad who have a financial stake (and hold key positions) in 2 out of 7 of Mercedes-Benz’s black-owned dealerships. The family-owned stores are located in Atlanta, Georgia and Covington, Louisiana.

According to the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD), 95 percent of today’s minority owned dealerships are first-generation dealerships. However, when it comes to minority dealers, especially Black dealers, the numbers are grave. One means of creating general wealth is through owning dealerships. They are literally cash cows, if run properly. This prominent Atlanta family has made provisions to hand the keys off to one of their daughters, when the time becomes appropriate, as opposed to allowing the business to slip outside of their hands (into other communities).

'Auto Trends' Talks To Minority Automotive Dealer Historian Damon Lester (Two Shows)

As Auto Trends with JeffCars.com wraps up Black History Month, Damon Lester, the current owner of the Maryland-based Nissan of Bowie and the former president of the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD), joins us over the next two weeks to discuss the highs and lows he encountered during his 16-year tenure at the helm the organization.

Since its founding in 1980, NAMAD has collaborated with policy makers and auto manufacturers to establish fair and sustainable business practices for minority dealers in America.

Currently, ethnic dealers account for approximately 8 percent of total U.S. dealerships. When Lester became president of the dealer advocacy organization in 2006, the total minority dealership count was just short of its an all-time high at 1,756, according to NAMAD data stats. However, when the subprime mortgage crisis crippled the economy a few years later, 54 percent of the ethnic dealerships were forced to close their doors, bottoming out in 2010 with only 811 stores still standing.

As we celebrate Black History Month, Auto Trends with Jeffcars.com, a multicultural syndicated automotive program, shines the high beams on Emeline King, Ford Motor Company’s first Black female car designer. King, who was hired in 1983, was one of the first Black female car designers in the auto industry. Marietta Kearney Ellis, who was hired one-year earlier by General Motors, was the first in the industry.

Currently, there are approximately 30 Black car designers globally. Black car designers barely make up a fraction of this exclusive club of creative innovators. In fact, one has a better chance of being drafted at .03%, according to sports sources into the NBA, than becoming an automotive car designer.

Auto Trends With JeffCars.com Celebrates 7-Year Anniversary Podcasting Older Shows

On July 25, 2015, Auto Trends with JeffCars.com, a multicultural automotive program launched as a monthly show on an Atlanta-based FM station. After just two months on the air, the station cancelled the program.

Immediately thereafter, the program was picked-up by a Phoenix-based AM station as a weekly show. Since that time, the 30-minute weekly show has expanded its reach to SiriusXM's subscriber-based network and several FM radio outlets, becoming the only syndicated multicultural automotive program airing throughout the U.S. and Canada. The high-energy program is also the only multicultural automotive show airing on SiriusXM, the largest audio entertainment group in the U.S with over 34-million subscribers. In fact, for a few years, it was the only automotive program airing on the SiriusXM network.

An Industry I Have Given My Life To Has Gone Silent Like A Hybrid

This is the paint job of NASCAR's only Black fulltime driver Bubba Wallace, Jr., official Black Lives Matter car, after the sport agreed to ban the Confederate flag.

Dear Automotive Community,

Over the past few weeks, America has been dealt a triple whammy. Our country has had to manage COVID-19, the recession and the recent racial injustices that can no longer be ignored. As Americans, we are no longer in a position to lecture other countries about their human rights injustices, when this country has literally turned a blind eye to the Black community, more specifically Black men who look like me.

The industry, which I have invested my life in, has literally switched into hybrid mode - being as silent as a mouse. Unlike with COVID-19, almost every automaker wanted to show the world how they were committed to fight the virus. Most automakers adjusted their advertising to reflect the mood of America, while others offered 'Car Mortgages' and deferred payments to let Americans know, as many were sheltered in place, and unable to work, sending the message we are here for you. Some car companies converted segments of their manufacturing plant to build ventilators, while others lent out vehicles to essential workers. The automotive community showed their compassionate side, as well as their financial commitments.

The Mindset Of A Self-Made Black Millionaire: Steve Hightower Talks About His Drive To Create A Billion Dollar Petroleum Business On SiriusXM’s 'Auto Trends'

To kick off our third anniversary on SiriusXM’s Auto Trends with JeffCars.com, we’re honored to have Steve Hightower, the CEO and president of Hightowers Petroleum, a privately-owned, Ohio-based company.

While we’ve had an opportunity to talk to a host of entrepreneurs and barrier breakers over the years, Hightower, whom we consider to be a ‘master teacher,’ has his eyes set on becoming a part of a super elite club, where individuals like Reginald F. Lewis paved the way in the eighties. Lewis, who died from brain cancer at the age of 50, was the first Black person to create a Billion dollar organization.
