What’s New:Hyundai rolls into the 2012 model year with a redesign
Accent. With the new design, Hyundai engineers also made tweaks underneath the
hood, offering a new, fuel-efficient 1.6-liter engine with a 6-speed
transmission.
Pros: Besides its sister vehicle, the Kia Rio,
the Hyundai Accent SE is one of the best buys in the subcompact category,
offering a best-in-class new-vehicle (and powertrain warranty), an adjustable
front center armrest, a XM satellite radio subscription and automatic
headlights.
And besides this subcompact being loaded with
content, buyers can look forward to this roomy subcompact offering comfortable
front seats along with ample cargo space, especially when the rear seats are
folded down.
Cons: When a vehicle is prices at under $17,000 these days, there
isn’t much to gripe about, except the fact that the Accent hatchback we
reviewed lacked a cargo cover light and illuminated vanity mirrors.
Highlights: Kia is the sister brand to Hyundai. These days Kia is pitching itself as a performance-oriented brand, going after the Dodge division., while at the same time filling in for the now defunct Pontiac division.

What’s New:The Forte line up expands this model-year from just offering a sedan and a coupe (Koup) to now adding on a hatchback. With the new addition, Kia's hatchback offers the versatility and room compact buyers are seeking, but in an extremely sporty package, especially when one opts for cool looking SX trim.
Pros:Kia has come a long way over the past few years. Our top-end Kia Forte SX hatchback was equipped with such optional features as (heated front) leather seats, an automatic dimming mirror, a power sunroof, a rear view camera, a navigation system and a push-button starter with a smart key, which allowed us to lock and unlock the exterior doors without the use of a key. A few years ago this would have been unheard for a Kia.
The sporty hatchback we reviewed was not only roomy, but it also handled extremely well since it was outfitted with a specially tuned, Kia-developed suspension adjusted perfectly for responsive handling. The handling was complimented by Kia’s signature red gauges. Furthermore, the black leather seats in our Kia were outlined by red stitching.
-
Also with the addition of the hatchback to the Forte line, buyers can not only expect additional cargo room when the rear seat is folded down, but an attachable security cargo cover when the rear seats are occupied too.

What Makes This A Buick:The all-new Verano mimics larger Buicks by offering ice-blue ambient lighting like what’s found in the interior cabin of the upscale LaCrosse to the brand’s signature chrome waterfall grille and portholes.
After successfully reviving the Cadillac brand, GM is finally back in the game of offering a true fullsize luxury sedan. The 2013 Cadillac XTS will join the line up in the spring of 2012, replacing the dated DTS and STS sedans. Cadillac unveiled the 2013 XTS today, the newest addition to the Cadillac luxury sedan lineup.
Larger than the CTS, the new XTS delivers the space, elegance and dramatic presence that are Cadillac signatures, but with entirely new and technically advanced methods tuned for a new generation of luxury customers, according to the folks from GM. It also marks the debut of CUE, a comprehensive in-vehicle experience that merges intuitive design with auto industry-first controls and commands for information and media control.
Highlights:This is GM’s first gas and electric-powered mass marketed vehicle. Early statistics reveal that 78% of Volt buyers didn't own a GM vehicle at the time of the purchase. On average, about 43% of Chevy buyers are conquests buyers, consumers outside of the GM brand purchasing a vehicle, according to R.L. Polk, a Michigan-based data mining company.

Recommended Fuel: Premium
Standard Fuel Mileage: Electric Only: 95-city/90-hwy Gas Only: 35-city/40-hwy
What’s New:GM’s gas-powered, electric vehicle is all-new for 2011. This is the only mass-produced electric, gas-powered vehicle available in the market place. Other than this vehicle being fueled by electricity, the Volt rides and drives like any other vehicle. The Volt can be recharged simply by plugging the standard cord into a wall unit with a 120v outlet. However, an optional 240v outlet is worth the expense to cut down on the charging time.
Pros:After arriving to much fanfare, the Chevy Volt hatchback has finally arrived with its solar panel roof. This high-tech vehicle not only runs off electricity, but gas too. Just like any gas-powered vehicle, the well-equipped Volt offers many of the same amenities. The only major options available on the vehicle are a rear camera with audible sensors, 17-inch polished alloy wheels, a 240v charger, which we strongly recommend, and a Premium Trim Package, which consists of leather seats, heated front seats and a leather steering wheel.
The Volt also offers an array of user friendly gauges, helping drivers understand the operation of this unique vehicle and monitor the miles when using either the gas or the electricity. With the Volt, drivers can schedule either immediate or delayed charges, as to eliminate charging the vehicle during peak hours.
Drivers can also monitor the usage of the electricity remotely via a Smartphone application or a computer.
Furthermore, with this vehicle running off of both gas and electricity, drivers don’t have to be overly concerned about locating a charging station, when they venture away from home base of their charging station, since the vehicle is equipped with a 9.3 gallon steel fuel tank, which is capable of achieving 344 miles. When the electric charge is depleted, the Volt immediately seamlessly switches over to gas mode.
Overall this vehicle will allow drivers to achieve maximum highway or city mileage, whether the vehicle is in gas or electric mode. There are some reports coming out of GM stating that some Volt owners are achieving up to 1,000 miles between fill ups. For the first 35 miles, the Volt can drive gas- and tailpipe emissions-free using a full electric charge. By drivers depending on the electric charge, this should help to eliminate pollution.
Highlight:The instrument cluster, the headlights and the taillights of the all-new Sonic drew inspiration and styling cues from today’s motorcycles. Moreover, this is the only subcompact being made in America according to the folks at GM. Furthermore, the all-new Sonic, which offers two more airbags than the vehicles in its segment, bringing the whopping total to ten received high marks recently from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Test vehicle’s MSRP: $18,580 (Base price starts at $14,495)
Major Standard Features: 10 airbags; 15-inch wheels; a 5-speed manual transmission; a hill-assist hold feature; automatic headlights; traction control; a driver’s seat armrest; remote keyless entry; a tilt/telescopic manual steering wheel; non illuminating vanity mirrors; sport cloth trim seats; and provides turn-by-turn navigation free for 6-month via GM’s subscription-based OnStar System
Standard Audio System: a 4-speaker AM/FM audio system
Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles
Bluetooth Connectivity: Yes, depending on the model.
Standard Engine/Horsepower: 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder/138-hp
Standard Fuel Mileage:25-city/35-hwy
What’s New: The Sonic is all-new to Chevy brand, replacing the Aveo.
Pros: Unlike the Aveo, the vehicle the Sonic replaced, Chevy’s newest subcompact is roomy, provides loads of standard amenities and style, especially in the top of the line LTZ hatchback trim with the optional 17-inch wheels. The Sonic is also available as a sedan too.
Also we were extremely impressed with the ride-and-handling abilities of the all-new Sonic. We had an opportunity to climb the steep hills of San Francisco effortlessly in both a manual with a turbo and a non turbo with an automatic transmission. Not only did the Sonic snap-up the roads in San Francisco, the spunky four-cylinder also glided through the coastline of California’s RedwoodNational Park, especially when we were behind the wheel of the fun-to-drive turbo. (Just as a side note, the Sonic turbo is currently only available with a manual, an automatic will be available soon.)
Furthermore, due to the size of the sporty subcompact, the roomy interior would have easily classified this vehicle as a compact, as opposed to subcompact a few years ago. In fact, the rear seats in the Sonic seemed to provide more rear legroom and comfort than the seven-passenger Chevy Traverse crossover when seated in the third-row. How ironic?
Moreover, the instrument panel of the Sonic mirrors that of both a motorcycle and the upscale Chevy Cruze. GM definitely spent time and money in this vehicle in hopes of delivering their first world-class subcompact.
Furthermore, depending upon one’s price point, the Sonic can be equipped such features as fog lights, leatherette seats (fake leather), a sunroof, heated front seats, an upgraded six-speaker premium sounding with a CD player and XM satellite radio, power windows and 16 (or 17) inch wheels.
Cons: The pricing of the Sonic and all of its competitors can be somewhat unnerving. With pricing for a loaded-up Sonic nearing the $20,000 mark, some consumers may find that it makes more sense to back down to a two- to- three-year old midsize vehicle like a Chevy Malibu or Honda Accord.
And while the Sonic was loaded with a number of features, GM did manage to cut some costs in this vehicle by not offering an armrest for the front passenger seat or illuminated vanity mirrors. Also we surprised that this vehicle doesn’t achieve 40 miles per gallon on the highway.
The completely redesigned 7th-generation Porsche 911 Carrera recently made its world debut. At first glance, the vehicle looks the same as the 2011 model. However, the wheelbase is 3.9 inches longer and the height has been reduced, emphasizing the wider front track. The side mirrors are now mounted on the upper edge of the door, which also helps highlight the new design line and gives the visual impression of width.
Moreover, the 911 Carrera will be equipped with a new 350-hp, 3.4-liter boxer engine, while the 911 Carrera S will be outfitted with a 400 hp, 3.8-liter boxer engine, pushing out 15 extra horses than the previous model.
Just as one would expect from the German automaker, Porsche designers created an interior reminiscent of the Carrera GT. The driver is now even more closely integrated within the cockpit thanks to the rising center console and high-mounted shift lever or gear selector located close to the steering wheel.
Also this Porsche will have two features to improve gas mileage: an Automatic-Start-Stop function and the world’s first seven-speed manual transmission.
And for those looking to get behind the wheel, they'll have to wait until next year. The first new 911 models will arrive in U.S. dealerships beginning in February of 2012. The new 911 Carrera Coupe will have a base MSRP of $82,100, while the 911 Carrera S Coupe’s base MSRP will be $96,400. Prices do not include the destination cost. However, when spending this much money, who is really concerned about desination costs or car insurance, for that matter?
The Prius v will be available in several colors and three models once it makes its away to the United States.
Highlight: The current-generation Prius hatchback owns approximately 52 percent of the hybrid market share, according to the folks at Toyota.
What’s New: Due to the popularity of the Prius hatchback, Toyota is creating more models under the hybrid's name. The all-new Prius v will be joining the Prius soon. This five seater is a cross between a station wagon and a crossover. So it’s basically a larger version of the current-generation Prius hatchback. Just like the current-generation, the v won’t offer a third-row.
Why It’s Called A v: This new addition is called a v since it represents versatility. According to the folks at Toyota, this hybrid offers 80 percent more cargo room than most small SUVs.
Arrival Date: This fall.
Expected Pricing: No pricing yet! However, the v is expected to be priced higher than the current Prius hatchback, which starts out in the low $20s. And the vehicle will be available in three trim levels.
Standard Engine/Horsepower: 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder engine/134-horsepower
Students from Johnson C. Smith University take a few moments to pose with the 2012 Prius v.
Estimated Fuel Mileage: 44-city/40-hwy
Major Standard Features: a push-button keyless starter; bottle holders built into the front (and rear) door pockets; a reserved spaced for umbrellas under the second-row seats; Bluetooth connectivity; a USB port; 16-inch wheels; automatic on/off headlights; single dial automatic climate control system; and 60/40 partial reclining rear split bench sliding seats with a center armrest
Standard Audio System: AM/FM CD player with 6 speakers
Optional Green Edge Audio System: a premium JBL audio system with an 8 channel amplifier and door-mounted acoustic lens speakers; an available HD radio system enables CD sound quality from digital FM broadcasts; iTune taggings will be available; 3-month satellite radio subscription
Pros: For folks who love gadgets, Toyota is pushing the envelope, offering Entune, the automaker's first multimedia system. This new system will integrate one’s smartphone, allowing the use of mobile apps, such as Bing, OpenTable and movietickets.com, Pandora and iheartradio.
Also the folks at Toyota are making big moves with the Prius v new audio system with the Entune feature. They’re saying that the new system will allow an advanced conversational voice recognition which will help the driver to stay focused on the road by eliminating the need to memorize thousands of voice commands. The system will also allow for audio read-back and replay capabilities for text messages, with the ability to pre-set quick reply messages like what’s found on most of today’s smartphones. Since we were driving a prepoduction vehicle, the folks at Toyota's headquarters were doing some updates to the system so we didn't have an opportunity to see it in use. We look forward to using this feature during our extensive test drive later this year.
Later this spring, Porsche will raise the bar by introducing the four-door Panamera Turbo S, a ultra high -performance sports sedan. The engine in the new top-of-the-line Panamera is based on the already proven and powerful twin-turbocharged V8 engine in the Panamera Turbo. The 4.8 liter, V8 engine in the Turbo S achieves a maximum output of a whopping 550-horsepower, which is 10 percent more than the 500 horsepower delivered by the Panamera Turbo.
According to Porsche, the torque is also increased over the Turbo from 516 lb-ft to 553 lb-ft. In the "Sport" and "Sport Plus" mode of the standard Sport Chrono Package Turbo, the overboost function temporarily generates additional torque with a peak rating of 590 lb.-ft.
And the power packed Porsche is outfitted with new 20-inch Turbo II wheels that offers an increased rear axle track width, side skirts from the Porsche Exclusive range and the adaptive four-way extending rear spoiler expresses the car's elite performance abilities.
Inside the curvaceous cabin, the Panamera Turbo S is accessorized with standard bi-color leather finish. A new combination of black/cream is offered exclusively for the new Panamera Turbo S with Agate Grey/cream also being added as an exclusive option later this year. Agate Gray Metallic will also be an exclusive exterior color.
The new Porsche Panamera Turbo S will have a MSRP of $173,200.
Test vehicle’s MSRP: $23,455 (The base price starts at $19,950)
Major Standard Features: 16-inch wheels; an automatic climate control;anAM/FM/CD/USB Audio System with six speakers; iPod connectivity; power windows, power door locks; remote entry
Standard Engine/Horsepower: 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine/122
Standard Fuel Mileage: 31-city/37-highway (manual transmission) and 35-city /39-highway (automatic transmission)
What’s New:
After being phased out in the nineties, the sporty, two-seater hatchback returns to the line up this time as a hybrid.
Pros:
This is the first hybrid we’ve ever reviewed with a fun-to-drive six-speed manual transmission. Usually, a hybrid isn’t available with a manual transmission
Also the CR-Z is available in two trim levels: a base and an upgrade EX model. In addition to the standard features noted above on the base model, the CR-Z EX trim is equipped with a 6-speaker, 360-watt audio system, a subwoofer and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The EX trim is also available with a voice-activated navigation system.
Moreover, the CR-Z is available in three driving modes: sport, normal and economy. The CR-Z’s 3-D meter instrument panel highlights a color coded system to reflect the driving mode. Red shows that the vehicle is being driven in Sport mode, while blue and green shows if the vehicle is being driven from efficient to less efficient in terms of gas mileage.
And for the car enthusiasts wanting a hybrid that can be tricked-out, the CR-Z is just the vehicle. Tuner enthusiasts will find that an optional 17-inch dealer installed wheel package can enhance the overall look and ride of the compact hatchback.
And, while the two-seater CR-Z may be lacking rear seats due to its compact size, Honda has opted to replace them with a hidden storage area that can accommodate such features as iPads, laptops or duffle bags.
Since the current-generation Acura TL hit the scene, it has been embarked in contoversy with its sharp edge lines and in-your-face grille. After taking a lot of grief, Acura has finally decided to take action, toning down its look with the up coming 2012 TL by softening its edges. The 2012 TL's refined new look includes a redesigned grille, updated headlights and turn signals, a new fog light design and a shorter front overhang. The rear has also received significant changes too --with updated taillights and a thinner rear trunk edge.
-
Will these changes be enough to win back TL owners who switched to other brands? When the mildly redesigned TL hit the streets, the sales numbers will answer that question.
At first glance, Chrysler's flagship vehicle, the 300, resembles the current model. However, Chrysler officials have designed all-new exterior panels and reworked the interior, too, providing a more upscale feel. For the 2011 model-year, the 300 now offers Chrysler brand new SafetyTec Group, which combines advanced active- and passive-safety technologies for enhanced driver confidence.
-
The SafetyTec Group is available on the 2011 Chrysler 300 Limited, 300C and 300C AWD models and includes adaptive-forward lighting (AFL), high-intensity discharge (HID) projector high and low-beams with automatic headlamp leveling, Forward Collision Warning (FCW) with adaptive-cruise control (ACC), Blind-spot monitoring (BSM) with Rear Cross Path (RCP) detection, ParkSense front-and rear-park assist system, LED-illuminated rear fog lamps, exterior mirrors with supplemental turn signals and approach lamp (300 Limited adds HomeLink universal transceiver, rain-sensing wipers and SmartBeam® headlamps).
In select markets, consumers were given an opportunity to tow the 2011 F-150 with the all-new fuel-efficient EcoBoost engine.
After a three-year absence, Ford is back in the game again, offering two fuel-efficient six-cylinder powertrains for the 2011 model year. In the old bodystyle F-150, Ford only offered one six-cylinder engine: a 4.2-liter four-speed engine, which barely achieved 14 miles in the city and 19 miles in the highway, according to fueleconomy.gov.
In addition to offering two new eight-cylinder engines for the 2011 models, this time Ford is upping the ante with an all-new 3.7-liter six-cylinder engine, which spews outs 301 horses. With destination charges included, pricing for the 3.7-liter engine is expected to be around $23,390. ( In the 2010 F-150 the base engine was a 4.6-liter 8-Cylinder, producing 248-horsepower). Also for the first time the signature EcoBoost technology will be available in America's number one best-selling model, the F-150 truck. This is the same award-winning technology which has propelled sales of the redesigned Taurus.
The all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost, which kicks out a whopping 365 horses, has more torque than any competitors’ V8 with the fuel economy of a smaller-displacement engine. This EcoBoost engine will establish a new benchmark for its combination of performance capability and fuel-efficiency. Ford's projection is that 50 percent of the F-150 trucks they produce for the 2011 model year will be built with the 3.5-liter, six-cylinder engine. As of now, pricing and mileage has not been released. However, some of our internal sources have revealed that the Ecoboost engine is expected to be about $1,800 more than the base 3.7-liter engine.
Consumers were given an opportunity to test drive all of the F-150s with Ford's new engines at consumer clinics held around the country.
