What’s New: With no new changes for 2026, the Grand Highlander is virtually a carryover from 2025.

Why:

A hybrid powertrain

Max hybrid 4-cylinder turbo powertrain produces a net 362-horsepower

AWD

A variety of trims

One of the best hybrid warranties in the industry

Second-row bucket seats

Dual power sunroof

20-inch wheels

Car-like ride

Hands-free power liftgate

A high-level of safety driving aids

A heads-up display (HUD) system

Heated first and second row seats

Ventilated front seats (and optional second row ventilated seats)

Leather seats

Third-row seats fold flat to include additional utility space

5,000 lbs towing capacity

Smart in-vehicle wireless charging

But:

The Platinum trim doesn’t feel luxurious especially after reviewing a 2026 Hyundai Palisade XT the week before

Multimedia center is best used with the sketchy voice activation system

Being that this is a hybrid, its difficult to determine if the vehicle has been turned on or off with the push button starter

A complicated gear selector

When the third-row seat in use (limits cargo space)

FWD not available with MAX hybrid powertrain trim

Verdict: The Grand Highlander was launched in 2024 alongside its smaller sibling the Highlander. After years of hearing from customers, potential customers and car critics about the lack of usable room for the third seat, the newly launched Grand Highlander answered the call.

The three-row family vehicle, which is available in a host of trims, offers more legroom for third-row occupants, when compared to the standard size Highlander.

At a starting price of $47,000, the Grand Highlander is about $4,000 cheaper than the smaller Highlander. This is mainly due to the base LE trim not being available on the Highlander. And the Grand Highlander is available with a host of 4-cylinder powertrains, ranging from turbo gasoline to hybrid to the more powerful turbo hybrid, also known as the hybrid max.

Our family friendly Platinum trim was powered by a 4-cylinder turbo hybrid engine. Its also known as the Hybrid Max. This ultra power hybrid, which sacrifices MPG and driving range over Toyota’s standard hybrid, out runs all but one vehicle in the segment, the Ford Explorer with the 6-cylinder turbo engine.

Outside of the net 364-horsepower hybrid engine, the roomy three-row crossover was outfitted with such features as 20-inch wheels, leather seating, a radar-activated cruise control system, heated first and second row seats and ventilated front seats.

While the Grand Highlander is best suited for those with a family who likes to haul kids to soccer practice or take summer cross county trips, its just not as luxurious in terms of interior design and layout like such new competitors as the Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, as well as the premium designed Mazda CX-9.

Overall, Toyota offers a lot of bang for the buck for folks seeking a well-equipped crossover that outmatches the competition in terms of performance, mpg with the hybrid powertrain and the hybrid warranty.                                                                                                                                                                      Competition:
