Chrysler Finally Ponies Up To Take Action With Over A Million Jeeps, Addressing Fire-Risk Concerns

Chrysler Group LLC and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have resolved their differences with respect to NHTSA’s request to recall over a million 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-07 Jeep Liberty vehicles.

As a result of the agreement, Chrysler Group will conduct a voluntary campaign with respect to the vehicles in question that, in addition to a visual inspection of the vehicle will, if necessary, provide an upgrade to the rear structure of the vehicle to better manage crash forces in low-speed impacts.

Chrysler Group’s analysis of the data confirms that these vehicles are not defective and are among the safest in the peer group. Nonetheless, Chrysler Group recognizes that this matter has raised concerns for its customers and wants to take further steps, in coordination with NHTSA, to provide additional measures to supplement the safety of its vehicles.

SUMMARY

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Jeep Wrangler vehicles equipped with a 3.6L engine and an automatic transmission and manufactured January 23, 2011, through February 23, 2013. The power steering line may contact and wear a hole in the transmission oil cooler line resulting in a loss of transmission fluid.

Despite Gov't Concerns, Chrysler Refuses To Honor Recall Request

NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has issued a recall request letter proposing that Chrysler Group recall the Jeep Grand Cherokee in model years 1993 to 2004 and the Jeep Liberty in model years 2002 to 2007 (a total of approximately 2.7 million vehicles).

Chrysler Group has been working and sharing data with the Agency on this issue since September 2010. The company does not agree with NHTSA’s conclusions and does not intend to recall the vehicles cited in the investigation. The subject vehicles are safe and are not defective. 

We believe NHTSA’s initial conclusions are based on an incomplete analysis of the underlying data, and we are committed to continue working with the Agency to resolve this disagreement.

General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2012 and 2013 Buick LaCrosse and Regal, and model year 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco vehicles equipped with eAssist. These vehicles may have a condition in which the Generator Control Module (GCM) may not function properly. This could cause a gradual loss of battery charge and the illumination of the malfunction indicator light.

Two Recalls Affect 233,800 Acuras and Hondas

American Honda will recall approximately 101,000 Honda Pilot vehicles, 60,000 Acura MDX vehicles and 21,000 Acura RL vehicles from the 2005 model year and approximately 800 Acura MDX vehicles from the 2006 model year in the U.S. to address potential malfunctions of the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system in these vehicles. Honda has received several complaints about such malfunctions in these vehicles. No crashes or injuries have been reported related to this issue.

Acura And Honda Recalling 807,000 Vehicles For Rolling Concerns

American Honda will recall approximately 318,000 Honda Odyssey and 259,000 Honda Pilot vehicles from the 2003-2004 model years and roughly 230,000 Acura MDX vehicles from the 2003-2006 model years in the U.S. to address a potential malfunction of the ignition interlock feature of these vehicles. Honda has received several complaints about such malfunctions in these vehicles and is aware of a small number of related incidents, including two that allegedly resulted in minor injuries.

350,000 Out of 670,000 Prius Vehicles Facing Multiple Recalls

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. (TMS), will conduct two safety recalls involving Prius vehicles as part of the recall announced today by Toyota Motor Corporation.

Approximately 670,000 Prius vehicles are being recalled in the United States to inspect and in some cases replace the steering intermediate extension shaft.
Due to insufficient hardness treatment of some of the extension shafts, the splines that connect the extension shaft to the steering gear box may deform if the steering wheel is frequently and forcefully turned to the full left or full right position while driving at slow speeds. This deformation may create increased internal clearance and the splines may eventually, over time, wear out.

Honda Recalls 820,000 Vehicles for Headlight Concerns

Honda has expanded a March 2012 low beam headlight recall to additionally
include approximately 820,000 model-year 2002-2003 Civic and model-year
2004-2005 Pilot vehicles in the United States. Honda dealers will inspect and,
if necessary, replace components of the headlight wiring system. There is a
potential failure with the wiring of the headlight switch which may cause
the low beam headlights to become inoperative. The loss of the low beam
headlights may increase the risk of a crash. No crashes or injuries have been
reported related to this issue.

Safety Recall: Fire Risk Causes Ford Escape Owners to Stop Driving Vehicle

DEARBORN, Mich., July 19, 2012 – Ford Motor Company today announced a voluntary safety recall of 2013 model year Ford Escape vehicles equipped with the 1.6-liter engine built through July 11, 2012. Ford estimates that there have been approximately 11,500 of these vehicles produced and distributed for sale in North America, with most in the U.S. market.
