The Lexus ES Takes Smart Risk with New Design

We heard it was coming and now its been officially unveiled. At today's New York International Auto Show, Lexus showed its latest design change-- the ES. We were a little leery that Lexus wouldn't push the envelope as we saw last year with the current-generation Toyota Camry. However, we should have known better after spending time behind the wheel of the midsize Lexus GS sedan, which we currently have in our possession, that the brand is poised to recapture that 'it' factor again.

The fresh styling along with a host of high-tech features is sure to capture a lot of new entry-level luxury car buyers. The new ES will also be available as a hybrid too, which is expected to achieve up to 40-mpg!

Besides the stand-out styling, here's what one should expect once they step inside the vehicle....

• A newly sculptured seat enhances driver comfort. The steering wheel angle has been reduced from 24 degrees to 22 degrees for a more natural control position. Fluid-filled engine mounts, new sound absorbing materials and a tuned engine intake minimize the intrusion of outside noise. 

• Greater rear seat legroom and knee room are the hallmark of the redesigned, more spacious cabin. Knee room is increased by 2.8 inches and legroom is increased by 4.1 inches. The new design also offers additional foot room below the front seats. 

• Available comfort and convenience features include manual door window shades, a power rear shade, and a one-touch power trunk closer. Optional ambient lighting, discretely placed under the wood trim, softly illuminates the surfaces of the instrument panel and all four doors.

From what we've been told, this vehicle should be available in the fourth quarter. Oh yes, the vehicle has a new suspension system and offer the option of 18-inch wheels too.
