New Study Reveals Pedestrian Deaths Are Been Driven By SUVs

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), pedestrian deaths have jumped 46 percent since reaching their lowest point in 2009, as pedestrian crashes have become both deadlier and more frequent. The increase has been mostly in urban or suburban areas, at non intersections, on busy roads designed mainly to funnel vehicle traffic toward freeways and in the dark, a new IIHS study shows. Crashes were increasingly likely to involve SUVs and high-horsepower vehicles.

First Safety Test Of Muscle Cars Performed By IIHS

Think "muscle car" performance, and images of speed and power are more likely to come to mind than crash tests and safety ratings. Because no one buys a sports car to drive in the slow lane, the best all-around occupant crash protection is crucial. The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety recently put a trio of iconic sports coupes through their paces, and unlike more sedate sedans, none earns the scores needed to clinch a TOP SAFETY PICK award.

If safety is of concern to you, especially if you have precious cargo like children to transport, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts vehicle tests to help consumers determine crashworthiness — how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash. IIHS also rates vehicles for front crash prevention, systems like what is featured in the video that warn the driver or brake automatically to avoid or mitigate a frontal collision. Latest Gov't Crash SUV/Crossover Safety Test : Which Vehicle Provides The Best Protection In An Accident?

If safety is a concern of yours, check out this video examining the crash worthiness of several 2014 midsize crossovers and SUVs. You'll be surprised at the findings. From this analysis, we can only assume some automakers will be making some midcycle changes to address consumers concern for safety.

According to IIHS (Insurance Institute Highway Safety), the small overlap test replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or utility pole. In the test, 25 percent of a vehicle's front end on the driver's side strikes a rigid barrier at 40 mph.

The test is more difficult than either the head-on crashes conducted by the government or the longstanding IIHS moderate overlap test. In a small overlap test, the main structures of the vehicle's front-end crush zone are bypassed, making it hard for the vehicle to manage crash energy. The occupant compartment can collapse as a result.
