As the federal government has virtually eliminated consumer incentives, its left many upstarts and legacy automakers to either revise, delay or eliminate electric vehicles from their portfolio.
However, for automakers like Lucid, they have no choice but to continue along the electric vehicle path or fold. Despite the headwinds, Lucid is forging ahead, designing electric vehicles to appeal to those in the mid to upper end of the market. And the automaker is distinguishing itself by offering such features as canopy roofs and stratospheric horsepower.
Recently, we spent time behind the wheel in Lucid’s flagship electric vehicle, the Lucid Air Grand Touring sedan. Like Mercedes, BMW and Lexus, Lucid has elevated itself to the luxury class.
Yet, unlike the legacy makes, the California-based car brand has done this by singularly focusing on electric vehicles. Currently, outside of Porsche, there are no flagship electric vehicle sedans offering the horsepower and steep price point being offered by the brand. We must note Jaguar is revamping its portfolio to play in this lane, focusing on higher end electric vehicles.
So, as of now, the closes American competitor in terms of pricing and horsepower is the Porsche Taycan, a four door, all-electric performance sedan. Horsepower for the Taycan ranges from 402 up to a breath-taking 1,019, while pricing spans from a low of $119,000 to a high of $243,700 before options and a destination charge.
Similarly, the Lucid Air horsepower spans from 432-horspower to an earth-shaking 1,234. Pricing for the Air undercuts Porsche’s electric sedan. Out the gate, the Lucid Air starts at $71,400 and can easily ramp up to $249,000, before options. We do realize that the Lucid Air’s driving experience probably want match that of the German performance-oriented brand.
Unlike the more economical Air Touring model we reviewed last year, the Air Grand Touring suspension is designed for street cruising, cross country road trips or a day at the track to compliment the astronomical amount of horsepower produced by its dual motors. Furthermore, while the Lucid Air Grand Touring offers three driving styles, neither is harsh or unforgiving in terms of ride quality. Unfortunately, that was one of our biggest gripes with the lower end Touring model.
So, at a starting price point of approximately $115,000, the Air Grand Touring we tested offered 512 miles of driving range and an eye-popping 819-horsepower. In terms of Lucid Airs, this trim hit a sweet spot in terms of pricing, ride quality, driving range and amenities. Our opinion of the brand has changed to a more favorable position after reviewing this model.
Competition: BMW i7; Mercedes-Benz EQS; and Porsche Taycan
