Prostate Cancer Awareness Month: 'Auto Trends' Talks Candidly with a Black Female Urologist

According to the American Urological Association, approximately 1.8 percent of today's urologist are Black. Black men over index in terms of being diagnosed and dying of prostate cancer compared to other groups.

In fact, one in five Black men will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime. Unfortunately unlike with other groups, Black men will be hard pressed to locate a urologist from their community to aid in treating this silent disease.

As we wind down National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Auto Trends with JeffCars.com, the longest running multicultural syndicated automotive program in North America, talks one-on-one for the first time with a urologist. Just like in the auto industry where it’s difficult to find a Black-owned new car dealership, it’s also the same in terms of locating a Black urologist.

More importantly, when we’re in search of a Black female urologist, like with Black female new car dealers, its like finding a needle in a haystack.

Dr. Linda McIntire, a urologist who recently served as the president of R. Frank Jones Urological Society, an organization of Black urologists, joins Auto Trends with JeffCars.com for a wide-ranging candid educational conversation. While some men may have mixed feelings when talking about sex, erectile dysfunction and the likes with a female urologist, others realize that the opposite sex brings a sensitivity to the conversation that many men lack.

With that being the case, during the enlightening talk, Dr. McIntire covers everything from biases with clinical trials and the established prostate screening ages to the connection of Black mothers and sisters in select cancer groups and how that could place their Black sons and brothers in a high-risk prostate cancer diagnosis group.

Moreover, the doctor tackles cultural sensitivity in healthcare to measures R. Frank Jones Urological Society has taken to recruit more urologists from the community.
