What’s New: For the 2024 model year, the X6s are powered by
new powertrains that are aided by mild hybrid technology. The X6 M60i we tested
was powered by a newly developed TwinPower Turbo V8 engine, which produces an
eye-popping 523-horsepower.
Also, the BMW X6 receives
new front and rear styling and infotainment updates.
Why:
All-wheel drive
A V8 with a powerful 523-hp engine
A hybrid engine provides additional miles per gallon
A variety of driving modes
Stylish athletic coupe-like crossover
Supportive seating with pull out leg support
An easy-to-use infotainment screen
An ability to close the power tailgate, while seated in the driver’ s seat
22-inch wheels available
Heated/Cooled cupholders
Heated front center armrest
A firm performance handling suspension system
Front massaging seats
A high-end concert sounding audio system
Latest safety driving aids
A heads-up display (HUD) system
Wireless device charging system
A semi-highway driving assistance system
The standard Active Driving Assistant Professional system allows for hands free driving up to 85-mph
But:
The
Active Driving Assistant Professional hands-free driving didn’t work on our
test model. We were only able to use the co-pilot steering assist system
Unlike
with some BMWs, the test vehicle lacked a highway steering system
Rear
cargo room limited due to coupe-like design
Coupe-like
design reduces rear headroom for taller occupants and rear visibility
Pricey
The BMW X6 M60i continues to be in a class by itself despite competing with the Mercedes-Benz AMG performance version. Mercedes-Benz and BMW offer distinctive ride characteristics. The BMW is known for a stiffer ride and a less techy instrument design - despite having updated its infotainment system.
And, BMW’s infotainment system is easier to use and operate too, when compared to the Mercedes-Benz. Being that BMW's system doesn't look like it was created for gamers, it's just not as intimidating.
Moreover, the X6 is essentially the coupe-like version of its X5 sibling. In fact, the M60i adds the expression and performance the basic X6 lacks. At a starting price near $95,000, buyers can expect the coupe-like performance vehicle we tested to pump out 523-horsepower.
And with this year's revised 8-cylinder engine, the combined fuel mileage increases from 15 MPG to 19 MPG. Added to that, the total fuel driving range, with a full tank of premium fuel, increases from 328 miles to an astounding 416 miles, with the new powertrain, according to fueleconomy.gov.
Furthermore, in addition to the combined curved redesigned large instrument cluster and infotainment screen, the sporty BMW can be outfitted with options ranging from heated rear seats to an automatic parking assist package to a leather dashboard.
Lastly, like with most vehicles these days, the price of entry to the performance coupe requires several pretty pennies. Is it worth it? We'll wait for consumers to decide by the number of vehicles that peel off the lot.
