The
only multicultural weekly automotive show, which airs on SiriusXM HUR Voices, kicks
off its third radio season, with the gregarious
McConnell Trapp. Trapp, who is the owner of Speed Trapp Consulting, a
Michigan-based company, has a professional license to break into today’s
high-tech vehicles. The white-hat car researcher has the only black-owned
company we are aware of that consults directly with automakers on matters
related to software vulnerabilities in today’s vehicles.
No
longer is hot-wiring the only concern car owners have to tend with, after
locking their doors and activating the car alarm, today’s high-tech vehicles,
which offer a number of customer conveniences, have created a new set of
problems.
Just
like cyber hackers can take over one’s bank account or change the outcome of a
national election, the same can be done with the software systems of many newer
model vehicles.
This
problematic concern centered-around car hacking came to light a few years ago,
when Fiat Chrysler Automobiles became the first car company to issue a recall
that affected 1.4 million Dodge and Jeep vehicles. Cyber car hackers were able
to utilize a personal computer to control the steering, brakes, speed and audio
system remotely of several of the automakers’ products.
McConnell,
who is fluent in Japanese, will utilize his computer wits and car knowledge to
walk us through a number of measures owners can take to minimize the chance of
their car, as well as their personal data from being compromised. He will also
provide safeguards car owners should strongly consider, before taking their
vehicle in for service or body repair work. Furthermore, the professional cyber
carjacker will leave car renters with a tip they all want to heed, before
returning the car keys (keyfob) to the rental agent. Lastly, the Detroit area
resident, who holds a legal degree, will reveal the non traditional path he
took to blaze a trail, becoming a white-hat car researcher.
