The A-Class: Mercedes-Benz Shifts Down Market Again

Mercedes-Benz is moving down market again with its new compact hatchback, the A-Class. Mercedes-Benz tried this marketing approach several years ago with its C-Class hatchback. However, seemingly this time, we believe they have the perfect formula to attract a younger class of buyers. This concept vehicle will debut at the New York International Auto Show later this month.

Technical highlights include a new 210-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, a dual clutch transmission and a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist.

The aggressive appearance of the Concept A-Class, with its long hood, low silhouette and slim side windows, is given depth by the interplay between lines and surfaces. Inspiration was drawn from the wind and the waves, as well as aviation engineering.

And just like Saab instrument panel, the instrument panel of this sporty vehicle was also inspired by the cockpit of airplanes. Obviously this measure was done by design as to connect with a younger clientele. Mercedes-Benz also plans to incorporate a smartphone into the vehicle, too. All functions noted can be operated using a rotary/push control. The visual presentation of the display screen elements is unique, with a deep, three-dimensional appearance created by laser-like magenta-colored lines.

This vehicle will go head-to-head with Lexus' sporty and affordable CT200h premium-level compact. As of now, pricing or estimated time of arrival hasn't been released. However, when we get the details, we 'll let you know.
