After Ford Motor Co. released several snap shots of the much anticipated 2011 Explorer over the past few weeks, we've finally got our hands on the latest undisguised photos of this new seven-passenger, car-based crossover. Yes, the Explorer, which is expected to be in dealerships this December, is no longer based off of the F-Series truck platform and no longer classified as a SUV.
In fact, the vehicle will be based off of the same platform as the award-winning Taurus. With this being the case, this should be one smooth-riding, high-tech vehicle. The disadvantages of dropping the truck-based platform are few: less towing capacity; no more off-roading and lower fuel mileage.
Ford believes most consumers will be willing to sacrifice those features for at least a 25 percent improvement in mpg, a better ride and the ability to tow up to 5,000 lbs, if needed. Although pricing hasn't been released, we hear that the base Explorer should come in at least a grand less than the current model. And since the Mercury brand is riding off into the sunset later this year, don't look for a sister brand. We expect this vehicle will be a hit just like with most of Ford's redesigned vehicles: the Fusion, the Mustang and the Taurus.
